The Squale 1521 is widely regarded as the quintessential skin diver design, drawing directly from the legendary 1960s and 70s Von Büren case architecture. While many modern brands attempt to replicate vintage charm, Squale doesn't need to copy history—they wrote it. This 2018 Swiss-made 50 ATMOS features the iconic, vibrant sunburst blue dial that has become a hallmark of the brand's professional diving legacy.
Deep Heritage: More Than a Brand, a Historic Case Maker
Founded in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, by Charles Von Büren in 1946, Squale (the Italian word for "shark") occupies a unique and revered place in horological history. Before ever putting their own name on a dial, Squale was the premier manufacturer of specialized, high-grade dive watch cases for the world’s most elite brands.
When legendary watchmaker Blancpain needed a case robust enough for their iconic Fifty Fathoms, they turned to Von Büren and Squale. When Heuer needed to house its professional divers, they relied on Squale’s manufacturing expertise. To wear a Squale 50 ATMOS is to wear a direct descendant of the engineering that defined the Golden Era of professional scuba diving.
An Unmatched Value Proposition
At our list price, this piece offers an incredible alternative to modern mainstream dive watches. While standard Prospex releases from mass-production giants like Seiko continue to climb in price, this Squale delivers an elite, fully Swiss-made pedigree. Powered by the legendary ETA 2824-2 automatic workhorse movement—famed for its 28,800 vph smoothness and battle-tested reliability—and boasting 500 meters (50 ATM) of water resistance, it represents serious horological value. It allows collectors to bypass mass-produced modern divers in favor of a piece with a deep, independent, and professional heritage.
The Design & Vintage Silhouette
The 42mm polished case sits beautifully thin at just 12.5mm and wraps the wrist perfectly, thanks to the heavily down-turned lugs that made Charles von Büren’s designs famous decades ago. The contemporary case construction has been refined with modern-day machinery, yet it stays entirely faithful to the 1970s original.
The 4 o'clock recessed crown prevents it from digging into the wrist during active use, while the high-contrast orange minute hand offers instant legibility against the striking sunburst blue dial—a layout engineered for professional safety underwater that has since become a cult classic aesthetic on land.
Condition:
This specific piece from 2018 is in mint condition, showing minimal to no signs of wear. The polished case surfaces remain crisp, and the sapphire crystal (treated with an anti-reflective coating for maximum clarity) and aluminum bezel insert are immaculate.
Accessories: Comes as a full set with the original outer box and inner pouch, plus warranty paper and tag.
Strap: The original strap is missing, but it has been perfectly paired with an orange tropic-style rubber strap. This swap beautifully complements the iconic minute hand and enhances the vintage, professional dive aesthetic.
