Seiko 7A28-7129 RAF-Issued Gen 1 Chronograph 4630/87

Collectible military issue in excellent condition

$1150.00

The 7A28 holds the distinction of being the world’s first analogue quartz chronograph, marking a significant innovation in timekeeping. Introduced in the early 1980s, the UK military sought a new pilot chronograph to replace the Valjoux 7733-powered models used in the previous decade. The 7A28 movement, launched in 1983, caught the attention of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) by 1984, leading to a contract that lasted until 1991. In total, 11,307 units were produced with specific stamped numbers for the RAF.

The MoD was particularly interested in the 7A28 because it featured metal gears, making it repairable and durable. It was also highly legible and could measure time with a precise 1/10th of a second accuracy, thanks to its dedicated register.

The dial includes a P in a circle, indicating the use of Promethium 147 for lume. A version without luminous material was issued to the British Royal Navy, primarily for HM nuclear submarine crews, to prevent radioactive interference with sensitive military equipment. These Gen I watches were worn by pilots during significant conflicts like the Gulf War, Bosnian War, and Operation Desert Fox, adding to their historical allure.

The case back is stamped with NATO stock numbers, the watch’s individual issue number, and the year of issue. The broad arrow symbol signifies that it was property of the Crown, not an individual soldier or sailor.

Condition:

All functions, including the pushers, are in perfect working order. The case exhibits light surface wear throughout, as expected and even desired for a watch of this nature. The dial and handset are in excellent condition with no visible degradation. Importantly, the military engravings remain deep and highly legible across an unpolished case back.

This military chronograph is a remarkable example of robust, technical design with significant historical value. The period-correct nylon one-piece strap is new, but it can be swapped for a different color if preferred.
