Breitling Navitimer 806 “All Black” 1960

The Breitling Navitimer is the most legendary pilot's watch. The Reference 806 was the first version with a black dial and ‘beads of rice’ bezel and is now in great demand among vintage collectors, particularly with this years 1959 re-edition.  Introduced in 1952 the Navitimer was a useful tool for pilots. They could calculate kilometers, miles and nautical miles from the slide rule bezel.  The serial number indicates it was produced in 1960, so next year it will be 60 years old!

The dial has been preserved in very good condition with some minor scratches. The luminous material has a lovely honey-brown color, similar to the re-issue.  At 12 o'clock, you will see the applied golden AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) emblem (the typical double-wing logo).  Above the AOPA emblem, the dial is also signed ‘B’ and ‘Breitling Geneve’, an even rarer combination.   

Unlike many examples from this period which have become degraded and discoloured (due to ingression of moisture), the inner turning bezel shows retains an even silvery-grey coloration and all numerals are clearly visible. 

The stainless-steel case has retained its original, thick profile and with some normal signs of wear, but unpolished. The winding crown shows the Breitling logo.  The outer part of the snap steel back shows some wear from use but the original inscriptions are clearly visible.  It retains its original plexiglass with some minor scratches from wear.  Period correct replacement plexiglass is available and can be provided.

The watch is functioning normally and the chronographs runs, stops and restarts properly and all hands return to ‘0’.  The service history of the watch is not known and a service is recommended by an experienced watchmaker.

Inspired by the vintage models of the 50s and 60s, the Navitimer is still being manufactured and its popularity is enormous. However, for vintage lovers, the original is always more interesting than the re-edition. The demand for vintage Breitling watches is increasing constantly.  This is a great chance to otain a Vintage Navitimer in very good condition and to become an owner of a historically relevant piece made by a legendary watch manufacturer.
