The Seiko x Giugiaro relationship is one of the most notable and distinctive collaborations in the watch world. Since 1983, Guigiaro and his firm Italdesign have been involved in a series of watches that can generally be described as radically rule-breaking. It's testament to Giugiaro's talent that despite some outrageous-seeming design decisions, these watches remain captivating, popular and sought-after decades after their creation.
For Bishop’s watch, Giugiaro started with the same silhouette as the “Ripley”, but pushed the dial to the right, so the bracelet was offset. It’s a tiny tweak, but it’s so unlike anything a traditional watchmaker would do that it changes the entire feel of the timepiece. Both Ripley and Bishop’s pieces have become collector’s items in the vintage watch world and Seiko reissued the pair over the last decade. This is apparently what watches would look like in the late 22nd century, from a 1980s perspective.
This watch is named the “Bishop” as it was worn by this character in the famous 1968 move Aliens. Directed by James Cameron. The original “Bishop” was mostly black with red accents. This re-issue has the same design but now with a polished silver case, stainless steel bracelet and brighter blue/black dial with yellow accents onthe hands and blue pushers. This model was produced as a numbered limited edition of 2500 pieces.
Condition:
Overall the watch is in excellent condition with only minimal signs of wear. All functions work correctly and the battery was recently changed. There is a small scratch on the bezel at the '20' marker.
The bracelet is currently sized for a 7.2in wrist, there are no additional links. There are only some minor surface scuffs on the bracelet & clasp (as visible in the photos).
