The relationship between Seiko and legendary Italian automotive designer Giorgetto Giugiaro remains one of the most distinctive and avant-garde collaborations in horological history. Beginning in 1983, Giugiaro and his firm Italdesign set out to break the traditional rules of watchmaking, resulting in a series of asymmetrical, aggressively futuristic timepieces. Despite their radical design choices, these watches have become highly coveted milestones. This specific aesthetic is famously known as the “Ripley,” as the 1983 original was chosen to be worn by Ellen Ripley (played by Sigourney Weaver) in James Cameron’s iconic 1986 sci-fi masterpiece, Aliens.
Released in 2015 as a numbered, Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) limited edition of just 2,500 pieces, this Spirit Smart reissue closely replicates the exact proportions and stark sci-fi brutalism of the 1983 original. While its architectural profile gives it a commanding presence on the wrist, the core case dimensions remain highly wearable. The eccentric block housing on the right side protects the vertical chronograph pushers and is intentionally offset to prevent the watch from digging into the wrist during active use. Finished in a distinct, dull-toned matte grey that mimics the cold titanium look of standard-issue military hardware, it comes mounted to the highly unique, era-specific segmented steel bracelet that defines the overall aesthetic.
Values for these will continue to rise well in to the future with prices of the 1980s original hitting $4000!
Condition:
Overall the watch is in excellent, all original conditoin as can be seen in the photos.
All functions, including the vertical pusher engagement and the quickset date, operate exactly as intended. The battery was changed earlier this year and the watch is full working order.
The watch comes with its original box.
