Seiko’s SAWV003 boasts a unique feature: a door with four subdials. This door functions as a large magnifier, enhancing the readability of each subdial once opened. It can also be used as a general magnifying glass for reading text or maps. This design element is a nod to Seiko’s bold 1990s design philosophy, a time when no convention was too sacred to challenge. While Seiko’s modern designs are more reserved, vintage pieces like this one highlight the brand’s quirky and innovative spirit.
Originally released as part of Seiko’s higher-end collection, the SAWV003 was priced at 120,000 yen, equivalent to $1200 at the time. For a 1990s Seiko, this was indeed a premium offering.
The SAWV003 features four subdials: a circular day and date display, a monthly moon phase, and an independently programmable “towards the sun” hour hand. The hour markers are replaced with N, E, S, and W, assisting in navigation with the “towards the sun” dial. This hand can also function as a GMT hand, as it can be set independently from the main hour hand.
Both the door and the case contain protective crystals, contrary to the misconception that opening the door provides direct access to the hands and dial. These elements are
securely kept behind a second layer of crystal.
CONDITION
The watch is in mint condition. The crystals, main case, dial, and hands are all flawless. The watch comes complete with it' original leather strap and matching gold buckle. It appears that this watch was very lightly worn and then carefully stored for many years. A new battery will be fitted prior to shipping.
