1983 Heuer Regatta 134.603
Master of the Waves in Gunmetal Grey
$4400.00
The 134.601 is a transition-era masterpiece. It carries the DNA of the great 70s Heuer chronographs but looks forward to the modern era of high-tech coatings and specialized complications.
The Heuer 134.601 is arguably the most imposing and "over-engineered" regatta timer ever produced by the brand. While earlier versions were smaller and more elegant, this early-80s powerhouse utilizes the iconic Autavia 11063-style case. By combining a specialized yachting complication with the DNA of a professional racing chronograph, Heuer created a "tactical" maritime tool that bridges the gap between the deck of a boat and the cockpit of a jet.
While black PVD dominated the tactical watch market of the early 1980s, Heuer produced a limited run of "Pewter" coated timepieces that offered a more nuanced, metallic look. This Ref. 134.603 is the pinnacle of that aesthetic. The matte grey finish gives the watch a "battleship" presence—tough, functional, and distinct. It is a connoisseur’s choice, offering all the technical prowess of the Regatta line in a colorway that is arguably much harder to find in well-preserved condition. "Pewter" was the marketing name Heuer used in their 1980s catalogs to describe the aesthetic. In reality, it is a metallic PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) application.
The pewter-coloured PVD often proves a bit more resilient to visible scratches than the deep black version. While black PVD shows the bright steel underneath immediately when scratched (high contrast), the silver-grey coating is closer to the base metal's color, making "flea bites" less obvious.
The Engine: The Lemania 1345
Unlike standard chronographs, the 134.601 is powered by the Heuer-signed Lemania 1345. This is a purpose-built, automatic flyback movement. Unlike a standard chronograph with sub-dials, the 1345 here drives a rotating disc system beneath the dial. This provides a clean, high-legibility interface that allows a skipper to track the critical 10-minute countdown sequence at a glance, without the clutter of traditional registers.
The Five-Dot Countdown Logic
The watch features five circular apertures that function in a high-contrast sequence:
Start: Upon engaging the pusher at 2 o'clock, the five dots instantly turn Blue (or orange, depending on the specific production batch).
Minutes 0–5: The blue discs gradually disappear to reveal Orange.
Minutes 5–10: The orange discs disappear to reveal the Dial Color (Black).
The Gun: Once all five dots are black again, the 10-minute countdown is complete, and the race has officially begun.
Condition:
Finding a pewter-coated Heuer in mint, original condition is a significant challenge. Unlike steel, which can be polished, PVD and Pewter coatings are "one-and-done” - their condition is a permanent record of how they were treated. This example is flawlessly preserved, with zero chipping or thinning of the coating on the edges. There are only some light scuffs visible on the top right hand corner of the case. Crucially, it comes with its original full-length "long" pewter-finish bracelet, maintaining the seamless, monochromatic look from lug to clasp.
