1983 Heuer Regatta 134.601
The Dark Knight of the Regatta
$5500.00
The Heuer 134.601 represents the final, most refined evolution of Heuer’s dedicated yacht-timing lineage before the company transitioned into TAG Heuer. Often referred to as the "blackout" Regatta, this reference swaps the tool-watch aesthetic of steel for a professional, tactical Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating. In an era where PVD was pioneering—popularized by Porsche Design and military-issued chronographs—the 134.601 brought that "spec-ops" look to the starting line of the world's most prestigious sailing races. The Heuer 134.601 is arguably the most imposing and "over-engineered" regatta timer ever produced by the brand. While earlier versions were smaller and more elegant, this early-80s powerhouse utilizes the iconic Autavia 11063-style case.
The Engine: The Lemania 1345
Unlike standard chronographs, the 134.601 is powered by the Heuer-signed Lemania 1345. This is a purpose-built, automatic flyback movement. Unlike a standard chronograph with sub-dials, the 1345 here drives a rotating disc system beneath the dial. This provides a clean, high-legibility interface that allows a skipper to track the critical 10-minute countdown sequence at a glance, without the clutter of traditional registers.
The Five-Dot Countdown Logic
The watch features five circular apertures that function in a high-contrast sequence:
Start: Upon engaging the pusher at 2 o'clock, the five dots instantly turn Blue (or orange, depending on the specific production batch).
Minutes 0–5: The blue discs gradually disappear to reveal Orange.
Minutes 5–10: The orange discs disappear to reveal the Dial Color (Black).
The Gun: Once all five dots are black again, the 10-minute countdown is complete, and the race has officially begun.
Condition & Collector's Note
Finding a vintage PVD Heuer in mint, 100% original condition is a formidable challenge for any collector. PVD finishes from the early 80s were notoriously prone to "brassing" or chipping at the sharp edges of the case. This example remains flawlessly preserved, retaining its deep, matte black luster with only mimimal signs of wear.
Furthermore, this watch is fitted with its original "long" Heuer-signed PVD bracelet.
Why This Reference Matters
The 134.601 is a transition-era masterpiece. It carries the DNA of the great 70s Heuer chronographs but looks forward to the modern era of high-tech coatings and specialized complications. For the collector who demands "New Old Stock" quality, this example is a museum-grade survivor of Heuer's maritime heritage.
