Seldom seen TISSOT Navigator “Yachting” Chronograph ref. 45503 in mint condition with the high end Lemania cal. 1341/Tissot 2170.

Many consider Tissot to be a lesser brand compared to the likes of Omega, TAG Heuer, Longines, and others. However, I respectfully disagree. Throughout its history, Tissot has produced some of the most intriguing and historically significant timepieces to come out of Switzerland.

A significant shift in the watch industry began in the late 1960s, marking a groundbreaking point. Companies began to prioritize technical sports more seriously, heavily involving themselves in endeavors such as car racing and yachting. This era also ushered in a design revolution, replacing the solid, thin monochrome models with big, chunky, colorful pieces. The multicolored scale of the yacht timer epitomized this evolution perfectly. Many brands introduced yachting models during this time, with notable examples including the Heuer Skipper and the Aquastar Regatta.

The Tissot Navigator Yachting made its debut around 1972 as part of the Navigator line. This lineup featured a series of chronographs, some branded as Navigator, some as Seastar, and some bearing both names on the dial. Powering these timepieces was the Lemania 1341 movement, a 17-jewel automatic chronograph movement. What sets it apart is that, despite being a three-register chronograph, the minute register isn't a sub-dial but an additional minute hand traversing the dial like a regular second hand. A close relative to this movement is the Lemania caliber 1340, which Omega modified to create their renowned caliber 1040.

The Tissot Navigator Yachting distinguishes itself from its counterparts of the era with a 15-minute countdown scale running from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock on the Tachymeter ring. This scale transitions from gray to blue to red, indicating the final 5 minutes before the start of a regatta. The countdown helps contestants prepare for the race, ensuring they reach their optimal speed by the start time, much like a flying start in athletics.

With its substantial wrist presence and comfortable thickness, the Navigator is a noteworthy timepiece. The addition of the yachting scale not only enhances its dial but also serves as a captivating conversation starter. If you're seeking something extraordinary from the vintage watch realm, the Tissot Navigator Yachting might just be the timepiece for you.
