Introduced by Heuer in 1963, the Carrera quickly became one of the most iconic vintage chronograph models, evolving significantly to reflect the shifting design codes of the mid-century. While the 1960s were defined by the classic round case of the reference 2447, the 1970s saw Heuer embrace a bolder, more adventurous aesthetic. This era introduced the tonneau-shaped "cushion" case and the revolutionary left-hand crown orientation—a hallmark of the "Project 99" collaboration between Heuer, Breitling, Dubois Dépraz, and Hamilton-Buren to create one of the world’s first automatic chronograph movements.
The Reference 1153N (where ‘N’ denotes Noir/Bleu) represents the more soulful, "rock-and-roll" side of the Carrera’s racing heritage. While the Carrera was famously named after the grueling La Carrera Panamericana road race, this specific blue-dial variant gained legendary status far from the track. Famously worn by Mick Jagger during the Rolling Stones' peak years in the 1970s, the 1153N transitioned the Carrera from a specialized tool for racing drivers to a cultural icon. This second execution model, powered by the refined Calibre 12, perfectly captures that 1974 spirit—blending high-frequency precision with a deep blue palette that stands out as one of the most desirable configurations in the Heuer catalog.
Collector's Note: The Ref. 1153N is widely considered the definitive "rockstar" chronograph of the 1970s. Beyond the Jagger connection, the second execution dial is particularly prized by collectors for its deep, saturated navy hue and improved legibility compared to earlier versions. Finding an unmolested example that retains this level of color is becoming increasingly difficult, as many have suffered from heavy fading or "tropicalization" over the decades. For the enthusiast, this reference represents the perfect intersection of horological innovation and cultural history.
