1970s Heuer Monaco 1133B – Steve McQueen’s Iconic Timepiece
In the world of horology, a saying resonates among collectors: “An Autavia and Carrera belong in every Heuer collection, but a Monaco belongs in every watch collection.” The 1970s Heuer Monaco 1133B is more than a watch—it’s a cultural icon, immortalized by Steve McQueen in the 1972 racing classic Le Mans. This pristine example meets the highest standards of condition, making it a rare and highly coveted piece for discerning collectors.
Instantly recognizable, the Monaco 1133B stands out with its bold square case, vibrant blue dial, and unmistakable charisma. It’s not just a Heuer—it’s the “McQueen Monaco,” a design so distinctive it’s spotted from across the room. A favorite among car enthusiasts and watch aficionados, this timepiece embodies the spirit of the King of Cool himself.
Introduced in 1969, the Monaco was a trailblazer, powered by the groundbreaking Calibre 11, the world’s first automatic chronograph movement. Its racing pedigree and McQueen’s endorsement elevated it to legendary status, cementing its place in watchmaking history. While modern reissues pay homage, nothing rivals the authenticity and allure of the original.
This exceptional Monaco 1133B is the ultimate find for collectors seeking the real deal—a timeless masterpiece that blends history, style, and unparalleled craftsmanship.
Square-cased Heuer Monaco
If you thought it was Jack Heuer’s mind that came up with the phenomenal square case, you are only half right. “One day, a representative of one of our most reliable watch case suppliers, a company called Piquerez, came to us on one of his regular visits to show us the latest samples of watch cases in mock-up form. He drew our attention in particular to a new patented square case Piquerez had developed, emphasizing the fact that it was fully water-resistant,“ reveals Jack Heuer in his biography book.
Heuer Monaco 7733B Case
Jack Heuer negotiated an exclusive deal with Piquerez to use the case for Heuer chronographs only. This assured that their products would be distinct enough from Breitling’s production. And distinct they were. At the time a little too distinct perhaps, as their customers didn‘t show any mercy. Sales were disappointing and the Heuer Monaco production lasted for a mere six years from 1969 to 1975.
The square shape of the case is the main symbol of the Heuer Monaco. It was designed by Ervin Piquerez and was the first waterproof square case ever made. The case back is stamped with the Heuer logo and "Tool No 033". The number 033 stands for the special tool that was required to open the case.
Condition:
Overall, the watch is in “unworn” condition.
While many Monacos have been damaged or destroyed by “gasket melt” (where the rubber gasket between the crystal and case literally melted into a black goo), this example has a perfect dial. The gasket has been replaced with a new one. The lume on the hands displays some ageing with time but is fully intact.
The case is unmarked and unpolished, in its original factory condition, serial numbers super-sharp.
The signed Cal.12 movement has been recently serviced and has been checked by our watchmaker, all functions are working correctly and crisply.
