Dugena was a group of watch manufacturers based in Germany, with more than 100 years of history. Back in 1917, multiple smaller businesses were grouped as a collective of companies under the name Deutsche Uhrmacher-Genossenschaft Alpina-Dugena. They supplied watches under the brand name Alpina to the German armed forces during WWII. At its height in 1973, the company had more than 2,000 stores in Germany. In the late 60’s and early 70’s Dugena made some great sporty chronographs for racing, sailing and sports watch markets with some even manufactured by Heuer.
This particular model is a very rare, Caliber 15 powered, Swiss-made chronograph. An extensive search has only uncovered 2 other pieces sold online in the past 5 years. It is in near perfect condition, the only blemish being a scratch on the caseback from opening. The dial is a beguiling, at first glance it seems to be black but in the light it is revealed to be lovely shade of dark chocolate. The crown is unsigned, but features a beautiful cross-thatched design, same as seen in the earlier Enicar Sherpa Graphs. There is no degradation of lume, and it retains its original green color.
The Calibre 15 that powers this watch is the same as that in the Heuer Autavia ref. 1563 which also has a 30 minute register and the same small seconds subdial on the left. It should be noted that these Heuers have a market value starting at $5000. In our view, the Dugena is an outstanding value proposition for the discerning collector.
The watch has just been fully serviced by our in-house watchmaker and is running with strong amplitude of 285 and gaining only 3 seconds per day. It is accompanied by a brand new, high-quality calf-leather ‘racing’ strap.
Diameter: 44 mm.
Caliber: JRGK Cal.15, 17 jewels
