The Heuer Calculator is a masterclass in functional industrial design. Launched in 1971, it was built for a specific breed of professional—pilots, engineers, and scientists—who required a high-precision slide rule capable of performing complex mathematical calculations directly on the wrist.
While its contemporaries like the Autavia or Carrera leaned into the world of racing, the Calculator stood alone as a "wrist-bound computer." Today, it remains one of the most distinctive and imposing silhouettes in the vintage Heuer catalog, offering a level of wrist presence and mechanical complexity that far exceeds its current market value.
The Double-Layer Slide Rule
The hallmark of the 110.633 is its massive, dual-layer rotating bezel. Unlike standard GMT or diver bezels, this is a sophisticated circular slide rule.
Functionality: The outer rotating ring and fixed inner scale allow the wearer to calculate speed, distance, and fuel consumption, as well as perform instant conversions between the imperial and metric systems (miles to kilometers, pounds to kilograms, US gallons to liters).
Design Intelligence: By moving the complex scales to the bezel, Heuer kept the primary dial clean and highly legible, maintaining the classic 1970s "Orange Boy" aesthetic with its neon accents and deep navy blue backdrop.
Engineering & Movement
Inside beats the legendary Heuer Caliber 12. This is the refined successor to the Caliber 11—one of the world’s first automatic chronograph movements. A key signature of this movement is the left-hand crown, a design choice intended to remind the wearer that the watch winds itself and the crown is rarely needed. The pushers remain on the right for ergonomic timing.
The Calculator is often described as 'bulky,' but on the wrist, it wears surprisingly well due to its integrated-style lug design.
Condition:
Overall the watch is in excellent condition, unpolished and all original.
Case: Excellent with only very light surface scratches. The 45.5mm case retains its original geometry and sharp, defined edges. Both serial and reference numbes are clearly visible between the lugs.
Dial & Hands: The deep navy dial is immaculately preserved. The tritium lume on the markers and hands has aged beautifully, and the signature "International Orange" chronograph hands remain vibrant and fade-free.
Bezel: Exceptional. Finding a Calculator bezel without significant chips or fading is increasingly difficult, as these aluminum inserts were prone to wear. This example shows only the faintest signs of use, with all numerals and conversion scales crisp and legible.
Movement: The Caliber 12 is running strong and keeping precise time. The chronograph engagement is tactile and crisp, with a perfect reset to zero.
