1970s Certina Chronolympic DS-2 Chronograph 8601 800

Historic watch with beautiful blue dial & colourful accents

$2300.00

The Certina DS-2 Chronolympic stands as one of Certina’s most iconic and celebrated models, renowned for its durability and style. This particular chronograph, Reference 8501-800, gained fame in 1970 when Certina supplied it to a Japanese expedition team tackling Mount Everest. Led by Yuichiro Miura, the grueling two-month ascent was captured in the Oscar-winning documentary The Man Who Skied Down Everest (1976). The watch proved its resilience, enduring the extreme conditions of the expedition with unwavering performance.

Crafted in 1972, this chronograph impresses both mechanically and aesthetically. Its striking blue dial, accented by three crisp white sub-dials, exudes a dynamic, sporty charm. The vibrant yellow chronograph second hand complements the hour markers and pairs seamlessly with the matching yellow leather strap. The tritium lume dots on the hour markers remain fully intact, never repainted, adding to its authenticity. A tachymeter scale enhances the dial’s functionality and appeal.

Housed in a 43mm stainless steel cushion-shaped case, the Chronolympic offers a bold yet comfortable wrist presence. Its sharp edges and robust profile highlight its distinctive design, while the case back proudly displays the Certina turtle logo and a clearly visible serial number. The signed winding crown, adorned with the Certina logo, ensures authenticity.

Powered by the reliable Valjoux 726 manual-wind movement, the watch features a 30-minute counter, a 12-hour totalizer, and a small seconds sub-dial, delivering precision and functionality.

This particular example is complemented by a rare matching, signed NSA bracelet, which (aside from the end-links) is exactly the same reference as for the Heuer Monaco 1133 (which sells for $1000+).

This Certina DS-2 Chronolympic is a standout vintage collector’s piece, blending impeccable preservation, captivating design, and an iconic movement. Its combination of historical significance, rugged reliability, and competitive pricing makes it a remarkable find for enthusiasts.
