The Omega Seamaster reference 145.023, popularly nicknamed the "Anakin Skywalker" by collectors (thanks to vintage watch enthusiast Chuck Maddox), is a bold and distinctive vintage chronograph from the early 1970s. Produced around 1970–1972, it stands out for its massive proportions, tough construction, and visual resemblance to certain Speedmaster elements—while officially residing in the Seamaster line.
Case: The distictive case is an oversized tonneau-shaped (cushion/octagonal-inspired) design, approximately 44–44.5 mm in diameter (excluding crown) × 51 mm lug-to-lug, and around 14.5 mm thick. The case is stainless steel with a tungsten-carbide bombardment/coating for exceptional hardness and a bright silver/chrome-like sheen that polishes beautifully but resists everyday wear far better than standard steel. This sets it apart from the darker PVD-coated "Darth Vader" sibling of the same reference.
Dial: Features a black base with two contrasting red subdials and a light blue outer minute track. Applied metal hour markers (with tritium lume), white and orange hands, and "T SWISS MADE T" designation for tritium lume.
Movement: Manual-winding Omega Calibre 861 (the same legendary chronograph movement used in Apollo-era Speedmasters), known for its reliability, column-wheel construction, and chronometer-grade performance in many examples. The movement is "suspended" in a separate container withn the case between 2 o-rings, to afford maximum shock protection.
This reference is celebrated as a "multipurpose piece of kit"—combining bold 1970s design flair, serious chronograph credentials (sharing DNA with moonwatch movements), and that ultra-durable tungsten case that gives it a futuristic, almost sci-fi presence fitting its Star Wars-inspired nickname.
Condition:
Overall this example is in excellent vintage condition. The case shows little signs of wear except for a small ding at the corner of the case at 9.30pm. The dial is excellent with no visible flaws. The original tritium lume is intact with some signs of ageing/darkening. The orange seconds and subdial hands have faded to a light orange/yellowish tone. The movement has just been serviced by our watchmaker and it's running strongly for its age, with an amplitude of 321 and losing just 6 seconds per day.
The watch comes complete with a premium calf leather strap & omega buckle. Other choices are available upon request.
This is rare Seamaster reference and highly sought after by Collectors.
