There is something about the early vintage Omega Seamsters that truly embodies the golden era of dive watches of the 1960-1970s. Omega has a long history and heritage in dive watches, which dates back to the 1930s. The seahorse-adorned case back of the Seamaster series pays tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The seahorse logo was conceived by engraver Jean-Pierre Borle. He was inspired by an image of Neptune driving a chariot pulled by seahorses, which is why the Omega seahorses are depicted wearing bridles.
This Omega Seamaster 120 brings its tool-watch heritage to the forefront, with simple functionality, legibility, and durability. The absence of a date and the manually wound movement are a nice touch for the purists as well.
The Seamaster 120 dive watch appeared in the Omega line-up in the mid-1960s as an amateur version of the legendary Seamaster 300 model (introduced in the late 1950s), allowing for greater wearability in various environments due to its slimmer profile. The Seamaster 120 has a screw-down case engraved with the iconic Hippocampus logo and SEAMASTER-120 branding.
There were several versions of this watch released, including an automatic version with date (ref. 166.027), but there is something very pure and attractive about a non-date, manually wound design.
Condition:
This Seamaster 120 is in overall very good to excellent vintage condition.
The dial and hands are in very good to excellent condition. The dial is clean with not visible imperfections. The lume is intact and has turned to a nice buttery yellow color, matching with the hands. The lume on the hands has some slight darkening around the edges.
The case is unpolished with some light scratches mostly on the lugs. The bezel is largely scratch free and shows signs of wear around the edges. The plexiglass is original with the Omega logo with no visible scratches. The dial, crown, case and movement are all signed.
Our watchmaker has checked and regulated the movement. It appears to have been recently serviced and is running strongly for its age with an amplitude of 300 and gaining approximately 18 seconds per day.
