Vintage diver perfection at its finest!
The Breitling SuperOcean 2005 comes from a period when various watch brands set the trends for the coming decades with their full creativity and bold ideas. This diver's chronograph was first introduced in 1964 and featured a very unusual and creative design.
The star of the show? Its mesmerizing "slow seconds" mechanism, with it's unique paddle chrono hand timing minutes not seconds, powered by a modified Venus 188. To confirm operation, Breitling added a six o'clock activity indicator (dot) to show if the timing mechanism was engaged, paused or off, adding a unique charm to this iconic dive watch—a true collector’s dream rooted in Breitling’s storied heritage. This minute-centric design improved legibility for underwater reading.
It is paired with a period correct, curved end 'tropic' rubber strap.
This particular Breitling SuperOcean 2005 is the first generation (Mark I) which was introduced in 1964. A special look of this watch is created thanks to the large tritium markers and the square-tipped chrono minute hand. At 9 o'clock is a sub-dial with running seconds.
The Breitling SuperOcean 2005 is still one of the underrated vintage diver watches. It is constantly increasing in value and is extremely difficult to find in good condition. The example offered here represents and excellent opportunity for the Collector.
Fitted with a black Tropic rubber dive strap, this watch remains an exceptional, well-proportioned, and highly functional tool watch even today, ideal for timing multiple distinct events. Its timeless design continues to captivate serious collectors worldwide, sparking widespread demand for a modern reissue. Until then, the original remains a standout, ranking among the most remarkable chronographs ever crafted by any brand.
Even though it was produced for roughly 6 years, production volumes are believed to be low and due to lack of screw down crown fewer have survived in good shape until today.
Condition:
Overall this watch is in very good condition.
The dial is generally clean with some patina on the surface sightly visible in the region between 3 & 6pm. The white, minute chapter is excellent with no visible blemishes. The puffy lume is intact and exhibits a lovely & even caramel colour on both the dial and hands.
The bezel is also extremely well preserved without any visible scratches.
The front and sides of the case are in very good condition. On the rear of the case, particularly between the top lugs, the metal shows some sign of degradation (pitting) which our watchmaker has repaired as much as possible. (These blemishes are not visible when the watch is on the wrist). The case-back engraving is clear and strong.
The movement has been serviced by our watchmaker and is working very strongly & accurately for its age with an amplitude of 297 and losing just 1 second per day. The "slow seconds" counter works correctly. The watch will come with a Service Receipt and 12month movement guarantee.
