This watch enjoys a strong following \due to its design, which closely mirrors that of period Submariners from the 60s—a golden era for dive watch design. The first Calypsomatic series, launched in 1962, came at a time when the watch market, particularly for diving watches, was expanding rapidly. Advances in water resistance, including the widespread use of screw-down cases and crowns, made these tool watches more accessible, with the Rolex Submariner being a prime example.
The earliest Calypsomatic models, under the reference 5913, include two distinct types and several crown variations. They all feature an elegant brushed steel case with pierced lugs, water-resistant to 20 ATM (200 meters), and a screw-down steel case back (Swiss patent no. 238872).
The black lacquered dial bears a large logo (reduced in later versions), and the friction bezel, made of aluminum alloy, is screen-printed, graduated in minutes either clockwise or counterclockwise, and equipped with a luminous circular marker at 12 o'clock. The acrylic glass has an external “cyclops” magnifying glass at 3 o’clock for easier date reading.
The 5913 Type II introduced features that would continue through several generations of Calypsomatic. The large screw-down crown was confirmed, and the hands evolved to a combination of sword and lollipop styles, luminous but not painted, a characteristic retained in most Calypsomatic references. The dial also saw changes: the star was removed, the writing changed from white to gold ("gilt"), and tritium replaced radium for the hour markers. The date wheel was white, with alternating blue (even) and red (odd) numerals.
Condition:
Overall for it's age, this watch is in beautiful condition.
Dial & Hands: In excellent overall condition; the original tritium lume is still intact with minimal cracking. To note, the black lacquered dial is without scratches or visible blemishes but has a faint sprinkling of gold specks from ageing of the gold paint. Actually it gives the overall watch an interesting, lightly sparkling element..
Case: Appears largely unpolished, the lugs have some minor surface scratches and nicks from normal use. The caseback engraving is strong. The case retains its original drilled lug holes and has 5913 engraved between the lugs at the 12 o’clock area. The bezel has some light wear around the edge and only a visible scratch at '55'. The luminous pip is still present.
Movement: ETA 2472, 21 jewels. The rotor is signed with “Solvil et Titus” The movement has been checked, cleaned and adjusted by our watchmaker and is in excellent working order. On the timegrapher it is losing just 5 seconds per day with an amplitude of 286.
